Once the person struggling with addiction is ready to ask for help in changing their life, they will be faced with a major decision: should they seek inpatient drug rehab or outpatient care? Very few human beings can use illicit drugs, such as marijuana, cocaine or opioids, for a prolonged period of time without becoming addicted to the substance. Once addiction occurs, the individual typically needs to enter drug rehab in order to safely withdraw from using the drug. Unless the patient is independently wealthy or is covered by a comprehensive health insurance policy, there never seems to be enough slots in affordable and effective residential drug rehab programs to keep up with the demand. Sadly, as the number of Americans addicted to illicit drugs continues to rise, the need for affordable drug rehab rises as well.
Private drug addiction rehabilitation centers may become targets for violent Mexican drug gang activity. The problem in Mexico is growing worse, say officials, because members of drug gangs can enter unlicensed, private centers and locate rival gang members who are attempting to recover from their addictions. Some gang members use drug rehabilitation centers to further the drug trade or to find new gang members.
Treating drug addiction with another substance that could itself be addictive is a complex and highly debated topic among healthcare and psychological providers. Recent research is addressing this challenge, focused on developing a vaccine that may help offset nicotine addiction as well as other anti-addiction formulas, such as those designed for methamphetamine addiction.
