Marijuana Rehab Treatment

Marijuana is one of those drugs that users claim is nonaddictive, and it may be for many people. However, it is clear based on the number of people seeking treatment for their marijuana habit that it is addictive.  Chronic marijuana users report withdrawal symptoms that are difficult to handle, and that is why they seek treatment.  Withdrawal symptoms include:

  • Restlessness
  • Anxiety
  • Poor Concentration
  • Insomnia
  • Agitation
  • Irritability
  • Cravings/Strong Desire to Use Again

Cannabinoids are the active ingredient in marijuana that causes the high and the withdrawal symptoms when the user stops smoking or taking marijuana.  Over the last 20 years, growers have cultivated marijuana in a way that has increased the concentration of marijuana dramatically; in some cases five times more potent than the marijuana of the 1980s.

It is estimated that at least 10% of pot users develop an addiction to marijuana, comparable to rates of alcoholism among users of alcohol. It is a myth that marijuana is not addictive – it is very much addictive for some people. Psychology Today has a good synopsis article on marijuana addiction.

Marijuana RehabMarijuana Addition Treatment Provides On-Going Support

Support during withdrawal is important to prevent relapse.

Marijuana also tends to be a social drug like alcohol. People smoke in groups and have smoking buddies. They often find themselves missing the social circle as much as the drug when they quit.  This puts them at great risk of relapse, because it is important not to be around marijuana smoke as it is the biggest trigger for use.

Just Because It’s a “Social” Drug, Doesn’t Mean You Don’t Need Marijuana Addiction Treatment

Marijuana rehab centers are essentially the same places you would seek any drug treatment.  Marijuana may not be as powerful as heroin, but it certainly has similarities to alcohol addiction in that it is a social drug that is considered by many to be okay to use.

You will essentially go through the same process as anyone who is addicted to a substance, which includes detox, group therapy, individual therapy, complementary therapies, and aftercare/discharge planning.  During marijuana addiction treatment you will develop strategies for avoiding triggers when you return home.
